Arizona Weather Effects Your Skin

Skin CareWe’re lucky to enjoy a beautiful climate in Arizona, but the same weather that helps create an ideal setting can also damage your skin. Extremely high temperatures, low humidity, and plenty of sun take a toll on your skin that builds up over time.

Sun damage

The sun’s ultraviolet rays break down the fibers in the skin known as elastin, causing your skin to eventually sag and stretch. Exposure to the sun causes wrinkles, freckles, lines, and even cancerous skin lesions.

How to minimize damage:

  • Try to stay out of the direct sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear ample clothing to cover your skin, including a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses to keep you from squinting into the sun.
  • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect against UVA and UVB rays every day. Choose one with at least an SPF of at least 30. Apply about two tablespoons to your entire body before going outside and reapply at least every two hours.

Dry conditions

Arizona residents are also exposed to arid weather and indoor air conditioning, both of which can make the skin’s outer layer dry. This layer, when well hydrated, helps protect your skin from irritants, allergens, and germs. When it dries out, it leaves your skin more vulnerable to these environmental factors. Your skin may be dry, rough, and scaly, and it may flake, crack, or itch. Fine lines and wrinkles may look more noticeable.

How to minimize damage:

  • Limit your baths or showers to no more than 10 minutes. Use warm (not hot) water and mild soap.
  • Liberally apply moisturizer right after drying off and throughout the day as needed.
  • Add a humidifier to your home.
